Day 1 & 2

Leave for international flight.

Arrive at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg. Meet and greet.

Depart for a historical tour of Soweto.

SoWeTo (South West Township) is the largest settlement in South Africa, with over 2 million residents. Created in the 1930’s, Soweto grew in the 1950’s after the Apartheid government Group Areas Act forced all African citizens out of the inner city and into the areas allocated to them. Being the center of the struggle against this government and similar laws, Soweto has a rich political history. Highlights of this tour will be a visit to the Hector Pieterson Memorial and Museum , commemorating the student uprisings of the 1970’s; and Vilikazi Street, which has the houses of the 2 Nobel Peace Prize winners, the late Nelson Mandela and Archbishops Desmond Tutu.

Lunch is enjoyed at the local restaurant.

Check into hotel and dinner will be served.

Day 3

Johannesburg to Karongwe Game Reserve via Panorama Route and Pilgrims Rest.

We start early and drive east towards Kruger National Park, to experience the incredibly beautiful Panorama Route, with its dramatic, mountainous landscapes and winding roads. With highlights like God’s Window, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and of course, the mighty Blyde River Canyon, this really is South Africa’s nature at its best!

Lunch is enjoyed in the old gold miner’s settlement, Pilgrims Rest or in the cozy town of Graskop. Arrive late in the day at the lovely, luxurious lodge in the Karongwe Private Game Reserve, where we will spend two nights. (B,L,D)

Day 4

Karongwe Private Game Reserve: Big 5 Safari game drives, Boma Dinner

The day offers two exciting safari game drives in open game vehicles – one in the early morning and one in the afternoon.

Clients stand a good chance of meeting most of members of Africa’s Big Five, i.e. elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion and leopard! Game walks, where clients will experience the savannah on foot in the company of an experienced ranger, are also offered.

At midday, clients can relax or go on an optional excursion, e.g. play golf at the famous Hans Merensky Golf Club.

In the evening, guests will enjoy a delicious bush dinner – Boma dinner, under the twinkling stars of the African sky. (B,L,D)

Day 5

Karongwe Private Game Reserve to Port Elizbeth via Pretoria City Tour and Johannesburg.

Clients will enjoy another exciting early morning safari before breakfast. Enroute back to Johannesburg we will enjoy lunch and take a closer look at one South Pretoria.

The Administrative Capital of South Africa, Pretoria is also commonly known as the Jacaranda City, after the beautiful purple blossom trees that line the streets. The city is the cultural centre of the country, with many important historical buildings and sites, as well as fascinating museums. The imposing Union Buildings are the official seat of the government and house the President’s offices in Gauteng.

Later from Johannesburg, we fly to our next destination on the Indian Ocean, Port Elizabeth, known as the ‘Water Sport Capital of Africa.’ The combination of heavenly shores and invigorating sea breezes draw sports lovers to enjoy some of the planet’s best sailing, surfing, scuba diving, etc. (B,L,D)

Day 6

Port Elizabeth to Knysna via Tsitsikamma National Park .

This morning after breakfast we say good-bye to the friendly city and travel along the coast towards Knysna. We set out along the Garden Route. A very beautiful route, with the Indian Ocean on the left and mountains with green rolling hills on the right. Our first destination is the stunning Tsitsikamma National Park. Tsitsikamma means “place of much water” in Khoi. A combination of original forest, plantations and Fynbos – a large group of plants endemic to South Africa, of which our National Flower the King Protea is a prominent member.

Many rivers run through the forest, forming spectacular waterfalls and deep gorges. Clients will enjoy an easy walk through the forest and along the suspension bridge, crossing the Storms River Mouth gorge.

Later we arrive in Knysna, famous for its lagoon, oysters and over 800 year old iron and stinkwood trees. The evening clients will enjoy dinner at the Knysna Waterfront, where there are a variety of interesting shops and enticing restaurants. (B,L,D)

Day 7

Oudtshoorn: Cango Caves and Safari Ostrich Farm Tour

Today we travel north to Oudtshoorn via the spectacular Outenique Pass. With more than 90% of the globe’s population of ostrich found here, the town is known as the World’s “ostrich-capital” and we will of course visit an Ostrich Farm to learn more about these giant birds and the history of their farming in this area. If clients are brave enough they can even ride an ostrich!

From there we will continue onto the picturesque Cango Valley, where we will explore the limestone rock formations of the world famous Cango Caves.

After a busy day we make our way back Knysna, for a relaxing dinner cruise on the lagoon. (B,L,D)

Day 8

Knysna to Cape Town via Hermanus.

We proceed via the Garden Route to the charming town of Hermanus, South Africa’s No. 1 whale watching destination. Indeed fantastic to be able to observe these gentle giants – especially the Southern Right Whale – sometimes only a few meters from the shore.

After lunch in Hermanus, we continue over Sir Lowry’s Pass to Cape Town. In Cape Town, we stay in Sea Point very close to the Atlantic Seaboard – and in close vicinity to the famous Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and the city centre.

Dinner will be at the hotel or at a venue nearby.(B,L,D)

Day 9

Table Mountain Tour or (alternate) Robben Island.

Enjoy the ultimate ‘Mother City’ experience. Take a trip up Table Mountain (weather permitting) in a cable car. The new revolving cable cars give stunning views over the city. The summit of Cape Town’s world-famous landmark is 1,086 meters above sea level and the mountain itself is a national monument, with spectacular views of the city and ocean. It is covered with a wide variety of wild flowers and is the natural home of the famous silver tree.

If weather is not permitting for Table Mountain tour, then clients will take an alternative tour to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela and many other prisoners were imprisoned for an incredible number of years.

We will also see the District Six Museum before we go to the Cape Flats to visit Langa, Nyanga, Gugulethu, Khayelitsha and Crossroads. Unlike Soweto hardly anybody outside South Africa has ever heard about any of these huge townships, which a great number of South Africans call home. A local ‘Ouma’ or Cape Malay style lunch is enjoyed, and also a taste of sorghum beer.

We proceed to a market, a men's hostel, a herbalist and a craft centre, and clients will have the opportunity to speak to the local residents.

In the evening, another delicious specialty – possibly THE most South African specialty – a so called ‘braai’ (BBQ) is on the menu. (B,L,D)

Day 10

Cape Town: Cape Winelands Wine & Gourmet Tour

Today we will take a full day Cape Winelands Tour including a visit to the charming town of oaks, Stellenbosch. After some wine tastings and an introduction to the South African winemaking tradition, we continue to the Gourmet Capital of South Africa, Franschhoek. After another round of wine tasting there will be time to take a stroll in this beautiful and cosy little town. The whole day is dedicated to showing clients our favourite secret spots and wine cellars – a day to tantalize their taste buds in some of South Africa’s most beautiful landscapes!

We return to Cape Town late in the day and dinner will be enjoyed at the hotel. Note: Since this is a genuine wine and gourmet tour, we want only the very best ‘ingredients’, which means that we reserve the right to change and shuffle around a bit, according to season and availability. A ‘normal’ (rest reassured, there’s nothing ‘ordinary’ about any of our Wineland tours!) wine and gourmet tour looks a bit like the following: Late morning - First wine tasting (normally a small vineyard) and talk about South African wine making tradition and practice. Before noon: a walk in old Stellenbosch. Around noon - Second Wine tasting (normally a very modern wine producer). Gourmet lunch accompanied by a third wine tasting/pairing in/around Franschhoek, followed by free time/a stroll in the cozy town of Franschhoek. (B,L,D)

Day 11

Cape Town: Peninsula Tour

Clients will enjoy a full day excursion to the magnificent scenery and wildlife of the Cape Peninsula. This tour includes a boat trip to Duiker Island, where thousands of Cape Fur Seals live, and later a lunch in the cozy Naval village of Simon's Town.

We will visit Boulders Beach to see one of South Africa's two land-based African Penguin colonies and then continue along the False Bay coastline to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. Clients can have their photos taken at the most south western tip of the African continent and enjoy an invigorating walk, or leisurely funicular trip, up to the Cape Point lighthouses to admire the dramatic cliffs and amazing views.

The day ends at the beautiful Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens. Later, clients will enjoy a true African Farewell Dinner. (B,L,D)

Day 12 & 13

Cape Town: Onward Travel

Clients will spend the day in leisure, depending on time of their departure. Last minute shopping. Check-out from hotel to Cape Town International Airport – domestic flight to Johannesburg OR Tambo International Airport for flight home. (B,L,D)
